With another school year in full-swing and cooler weather finally on how, the month of September has plenty of traditional holidays, not-so-traditional holidays and downright wacky holidays. While some honor special people, important historical events, momentous occasions or worthwhile causes, other popular holidays in September celebrate delicious food, refreshing drinks and just-plain-fun events!
Was this our awaken call? I try to separate this of watching the playback quality clips and have myself, over a higher level, what's this about? How will we define ourselves as individuals and as a country in light of this barbaric act? How will we respond? Will we seek out vengeance so much in fact who's blinds us to the light there might be inside darkness? Will we harbor hate so that it fills us as it has filled those responsible? What has driven another to plan and implement such devastation of life and the way might we as being a country have played a job, perhaps through our own actions? How can we become a land and the ones of integrity, each and every one of us, so there may be no foothold with this type of act? What can a single person do, me or you, to help with regaining peace inside our outer and inner world? What do we tell the kids? I am humbled. I share this experience with people in Bosnia, in Somalia, in Paris and Tokyo, in Ireland and Colombia, and elsewhere inside world. And I am proud. There are extraordinary people within our country who rally together, who pray together, that will not allow this act to lower us but instead will rise to redefine themselves in addition to their country. They will "wake" to the knowledge that all moment is precious, they're going to take note of what really matters, themselves, their friends, their well-being, another man. What will you are doing? Who do you have to forgive? Who do you'll want to hug or tell about your love or pride or affection? What has been unsaid that now must be spoken? Someone inquired about today, 'did you know anyone there?' I recognized the question for what it was. Were you associated with anyone there? I wanted to convey 'yes' when I realized this. It doesn¡¦t matter that I didn¡¦t actually KNOW someone there. What mattered was that I WAS connected to everyone there, in New York, at the Pentagon, everyone in Bosnia, in Ireland along with countless other places. They could be my family, my friend, my relation, and they are generally. They are my neighbors, countrymen and some women, my fellow human citizens.
Before journeying to New York City, history and social studies teachers can prepare students with online lessons about 911. The websites for that National September 11th Memorial and Museum along with the new One World Trade Center are a good place to begin. Teachers can also ask students to look into magazine and newspaper articles and television news clips of the time period- and offer their findings to the class to share.
