The concept of the hero's journey began with Joseph Campbell, who in 1949 wrote the well regarded treatise The Hero which has a Thousand Faces. Campbell studied stories, religions, and mythologies from diverse cultures worldwide, along with this book he argued that many of such stories have common themes and structures. In particular he identified what he referred to as monomyth (later renamed the 'hero's journey' by other writers), which describes the kind of heroic journey he saw appear in mythology again and again. This journey was developed of a few stages the hero must complete, like a miraculous birth, some trials, plus a death and rebirth (literally or metaphorically).

The Tarot is among the only pictorial sources that depict the Hero's journey in the entirety. The Hero's journey is told through the 22 Major Arcana cards. The Major Arcana refer to the non-suit cards, which make in the first 22 cards in the Tarot deck.  What is so impressive concerning the Major Arcana, is their visual mention of the archetypal symbolism. More importantly, they emphasize the running life phases we all must encounter on our journeys. These are the stages of our psychological and spiritual development. The Tarot provides a structured interpretation for our life path and enables us to recognize these concepts at our deepest core.
